08/02/2010 - Council revokes restaurant licence

A Hastings kebab venue has had its licence revoked after police linked it to the increasing levels of crime and disorder in the locality.

Following the presentation of a list of incidents associated with the Kebab Hut and Pizza over the past year by Sussex Police, Hastings Borough Council ordered for its closure.

Chief Inspector Mark Ling, Hastings district commander, said the Kebab Hut's licence was revoked by the council's licensing sub-committee on Tuesday. The troubled fast-food restaurant and nightclub has 21 days to lodge an appeal and can remain open for the period.

Police carried out investigation on the business after a 16-year-old Arab student suffered fatal injuries in a racist row near the venue in August 2008. The language student Mohammed Al-Majed, from Qatar, died in hospital three days after being punched outside the venue.

Last November, Lewes Crown Court jailed George Austin for four-and-a-half years after being found guilty of the teenager's manslaughter. Austin's co-defendants, Paul Rockett and Alexander Quinn, were charged with racially aggravated common assault and wounding with intent respectively.
