25/02/2010 - Hole-drill burglary at jewellers
Thieves have drilled through the wall of a California jewellery store and robbed it of gems worth up to $1 million, US authorities have said.
The robbers made a hole in the wall of Mission Jewellers in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, dismantled its security system and made off with the safe that contained the jewels, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The burglars entered the shop by making a tunnel through the shared wall of an adjacent vacant shop and left through the back door of the store after taking a metal security gate apart, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.
The 1,000-pound safe would have required more than one person to move, investigators added.
Some evidence has been discovered at the scene and video from an unknown surveillance camera has been obtained.
The investigation will continue, authorities said.
