04/02/2010 - Landlord fined over gas safety
A Landlord has been fined £8,000 after failing to ensure gas appliances in his property were safe to use.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) brought the prosecution against 49-year-old Graham Barnes after he failed to have gas appliances at his property in Medlock Grove, Didcot, safety checked. Barnes, from Bicester Road in Kidlington, was also ordered to pay £1957.70 in costs, with £15.00 victim surcharge.
He pleaded guilty to not ensuring gas appliances at the property had an annual safety check, resulting in carbon monoxide leaking into the kitchen. Between January 2009 and July 2009 Mr Barnes failed to arrange the annual safety check for gas appliances and flues at the property, Didcot Magistrates' Court heard. He also failed to maintain gas appliances at the same property.
Mr Barnes was charged with breaching Regulations 36(3)(a) and 36(2) of the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998. After the hearing, HSE Inspector Dozie Azubike said: "This is clear case of a landlord ignoring his responsibilities and thereby putting people at risk."
