03/02/2010 - Security grants 'stop retail crime'

Crime-fighting grants have been allocated to about 1,000 small shops in England to pay for alarms, security cameras and UV markers.

Home office minister Alan Campbell announced that the £5 million Small Retailers Grants Fund will also give money to 72 partnerships between local authorities and small business to reduce crime in their areas.

The fund was set up as part of the Retail Crime Action Plan (RCAP), published last August, which was drawn up by the Government with the retail industry to reduce crime against small businesses and retailers.

Money can be used to be fund partnership projects which benefit lots of small businesses, or to buy security equipment for individual retailers. These items can range from CCTV systems, infra-red cameras and security shutters to anti-graffiti paint, safes and UV markers to reveal fake banknotes.

Mr Campbell said: "This fund was set up to provide real help to the small businesses that need it the most and I am delighted that more than 1,000 retailers will benefit from the increased security these grants will provide."
