23/02/2010 - Tesco store fined over mice problem

A Tesco supermarket has been ordered to pay £74,000 in fines and court costs after mice were found in a store near Ipswich.

Suffolk Coastal District Council brought action against the supermarket giant after an investigation as the Tesco Extra store in Martlesham found a "catalogue of problems".

Between April and August 2007, the council's food safety team discovered parts of the store were dirty and mice were present in several areas and it criticised the store for failing to stop the problem.

The Tesco branch was found guilty of eight offences under the Food Hygiene Regulations at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court and was ordered to pay a £17,000 fine and £57,000 in authority costs.

A Tesco spokesman said: "Tesco takes hygiene standards extremely seriously. Our customers expect clean and safe stores and we have thousands of people employed at Tesco to deliver this."
