17/02/2010 - Yorkshire pub wins national award
A Sheffield real ale house has become the first establishment to win the national pub of the year award for the second consecutive year.
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) called the Kelham Island Tavern a "small gem" as it announced the 2009 title. After being rescued from dereliction in 2002, the Tavern has 10 permanent handpumps and has picked up several local and regional awards.
CAMRA's 110,000 members oversee the annual competition, which marks pubs on specific criteria such as atmosphere, beer quality, customer service and all-round value.
The Kelham Island Tavern is the first pub to win the accolade two years in a row, after being crowned pub of the year in 2008 as well, and became only the third pub to win the award twice.
Previous victors were the Fat Cat in Norwich, which won in 1998 and 2004, and the Swan in Little Totham, Essex, in 2002 and 2005.
Julian Hough, CAMRA pubs director, said: "The pub's success is thoroughly deserved due to its high attention to detail, service to the surrounding community, and quality in all areas, not least in the beer."
