13/01/2010 - Ban youngsters using sunbeds - MP

Heath secretary Andy Burnham has said he "fully supports" a Bill which will ban tanning salons from allowing under 18s to use sunbeds.

Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts is also behind the call and, along with Mr Burnham, will give a talk at the launch of the Private Member's Bill, introduced by Cardiff North MP Julie Morgan and charity Cancer Research UK .

The Labour MP said she is "absolutely delighted" that the Bill has Government backing and hopes Mr Burnham's support will help the Bill to progress through Parliament.

Mr Burnham said: "The scientific evidence is clear - sunbeds increase your risk of getting skin cancer.

"It is far too easy for young people to use sunbeds and I am determined to take action to protect them.

"I fully support this Bill which will force tanning salons to ban access for people under 18 years old."

A Government-commissioned Cancer Research UK report discovered 6% of children aged 11 to 17 had used a sunbed, with the figure increased to 11% in the North of England.

The Bill will have its second reading in the House of Commons on January 29.
