14/01/2010 - Charity shops could lose £500,000

A charity has called on the public to donate "generously" amid concern that falls in stock donations and the closure of stores due to the cold conditions could cost its shops £500,000.

Age Concern and Help the Aged sells the donations that its shops get to raise money to undertake vital works, but the charity's collection vans have not been able to go out due to the bad weather, a spokesman for the charity said.

He continued: "In addition, many shops have had to shut and the ones that do open have seen much reduced business and a decrease in people bringing in goods.

"The charity is therefore urgently asking the public to give generously to their local Age Concern and Help the Aged shops."

Supporting the call, journalist Fiona Phillips, an ambassador for the charity, said: "Good quality clothing, accessories, books and CDs will be warmly welcomed."

Hugh Forde, managing director of retail, trading and training at the charity, said: "The stock donations the charity receives make a real difference to the lives of older people. All donations are hugely appreciated and directly help to fund our vital work."
