15/07/2010 - Historians helped by new group
Archivists and historians will get a helping hand to preserve thousands of years of history from a new organisation that has been launched in Nottingham.
People such as local historians, teachers, researchers and families will benefit from the launch of the Archives and Records Association UK and Ireland (ARA) which aims to aid those who work in the sector.
Chair of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) Sir Andrew Motion launched the organisation on Thursday at Nottingham's Galleries of Justice.
ARA was created on June 1, marking the merger of the Society of Archivists, the National Council on Archives and the Association of Chief Archivists in Local Government. It aims to improve and maintain services and standards across the sector.
Sir Andrew said: "Archives are the raw data of human endeavour. The ARA will ensure that archives are more able to take their place in the decision-making process in the business world, in government and across society.
"They have an essential role in improving accountability and encouraging public involvement in the democratic process."
