29/07/2010 - Man fined over rubbish refusal

A landlord has been ordered to pay almost £900 over his refusal to clean a rubbish pile behind his property.

Mohammed Sharif, 41 from Keppel Road in Chorlton, had refused to clear up the mattresses, builders' waste and rubbish bags which had been left at a property he owned in Baguley. The council served a notice on him after the rubbish was discovered, ordering him to clear it up, Manchester Magistrates' Court heard.

However, the council had to clear the yard after Sharif failed to follow the notice. Sharif pleaded guilty to not complying with a legal notice and was fined £250 with £600 costs and a £15 victims of crime surcharge - a total of £865.

The sum must be paid within three months. Sharif missed the chance to give his side of the story when he failed to attend an interview, the court heard.
