07/07/2010 - Police hunt jewellery heist's biker

Detectives are hunting the motorcyclist who was an accomplice in a £40 million Graff jewellery heist at a Mayfair store.

Scotland Yard has appealed for members of the public to come forward with information on the accomplice, who was passed a black plastic bin bag containing the gems shortly after the theft from the central London store.

The sophisticated plan to steal the jewellery involved vehicles being blocked and a number of getaway cars to help the robbers escape. However, the biker's gold-coloured Suzuki SV650 broke down a short distance away in Berkeley Square and he was forced to abandon it.

Police watched hundreds of hours of CCTV footage in an effort to trace the escape route of the man dubbed "The Stig", after Top Gear's mystery racing driver, because he kept his helmet on.

But they lost track of him after he walked into the 16-hectare green space of Green Park, a short distance from Buckingham Palace. A reward of up to £1 million remains on offer for information leading to the recovery of the remarkable haul of 43 pieces.

Detectives also continue to hunt a suspected "Mr Big" who co-ordinated the raid from a distance. The appeal for help on Tuesday night came after a jury found two more men guilty of taking part in the robbery on August 6 last year.
