01/06/2010 - Betting shop security code created

A voluntary code of safety has been launched to fight a rising number of robberies and violence against betting shop workers.

The code outlines a minimum level of safety and security measures for all betting shops, including specifying a maximum till limit.

The Safe Bet Alliance, featuring the Association of British Bookmakers (ABB), Metropolitan Police, Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS) and Community Union, composed the Voluntary Code of Safety and Security National Standards for Bookmakers.

Shop-specific assessments of safety and security should be carried out, while the findings may result in security screens being fitted to counters in shops identified as higher risk.

Ladbrokes head of security Chris Cerroni said: "Whilst the five major UK betting shop operators operate nationally, their premises are subject to inspection by Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) working for individual local authorities. By setting a single national standard, the new Code should remove the potential for confusion arising from variations between different local authorities and even different EHOs."
