17/06/2010 - Blackpool claims top seaside title
The nation has chosen Blackpool as its favourite seaside resort with Brighton coming a close second.
In a survey of 4,000 people by Which? Holiday magazine, the Lancashire town's famous illuminations were described as "simply breathtaking" with others favouring its special atmosphere.
Brighton in Sussex was runner-up, with those surveyed praising the resort's closeness to the countryside and promenade and pier.
Whitby in Yorkshire was third, with Bournemouth in Dorset fourth and another Yorkshire resort, Scarborough, in fifth place.
Bournemouth's beaches were its main draw, while the other two were singled out for their scenery and surrounding countryside.
The survey also showed that 40% of UK adults took a trip to the seaside in 2009, and that this figure was set to increase in 2010.
As many as 20% said they would be more likely to visit a UK seaside resort in 2010 than in 2009.
Rochelle Turner, head of research for Which? Holiday, said: "While Blackpool may not be able to guarantee the weather, with its host of theatres, fairgrounds and every conceivable promenade entertainment it's easy to see why the granddaddy of seaside towns still manages to draw the crowds."
