09/06/2010 - Engineering firm fined after injury

A car parts manufacturer has been fined £10,000 after an employee severed the tip of his finger while trying to clear a jammed machine.

Allan Formoy, 57, from Bradford, used his finger to try to free the jam in the machine at Federal Mogul Bradford Ltd, on Neville Road in the city.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found there were no control measures in place at the firm, part of global engineering giant Federal Mogul Corporation, to stop such an incident.

Federal Modul admitted breaching health and safety laws at Bradford Magistrates' Court.

The firm was fined and ordered to pay £5,000 in costs.

Following the hearing, HSE inspector Morag Irwin said: "A suitable and sufficient risk assessment would have identified the need for control measures, the most obvious being guarding, to prevent access to the step feeder.

"Fitting guards is not a costly, time-consuming or difficult task, and had they been in place this incident would not have occurred and a painful injury could have been avoided."
