30/06/2010 - England fans plan last minute trips

Thousands of England football fans are planning to leave their sorrows behind by going on holiday, it has been revealed.

Hours after England left the World Cup following their 4-1 defeat to Germany an online holiday site reported a huge rise in bookings.

Enquiries shot up after the final game in Bloemfontein, iknow-uk, which operates 14 regional accommodation and hospitality websites reported.

The site also showed that there was a 30% increase in holiday enquiries on Monday following England's defeat compared with Sunday when they were still in the World Cup.

While Fabio Capello and his squad have arrived home, hotels, B&Bs, holiday cottages and guesthouses across the UK are all now bracing themselves for a surge of last minute summer bookings from fans.

Marcus Simmons, managing director of iknow-uk, said: "We began to see hits across all of our websites rise from the minute that England crashed out of the World Cup on Sunday.

"It looks like people have been avoiding booking their holidays while they waited to see how far England would progress in the World Cup.

"The most popular destinations seem to be coastal towns and our accommodation customers in those regions are now preparing for a surge of holidaymakers looking for a last minute deal."
