24/06/2010 - Firm fined after worker trapped
A Greater Manchester company has been fined £26,000 after a worker suffered serious injuries when he became trapped in a machine.
ADA Machining Services, based in Ashton-under-Lyne, admitted breaching the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations at Trafford Magistrates' Court.
The 53-year-old worker was pulled into the metal-shaping machine in January 2008 after the firm, on Kayley Industrial Estate in Richmond Street, failed to put up a safety guard, the Health and Safety Executive said.
The man lost a finger, suffered a dozen broken ribs, a cracked breast bone and friction burns to the left side of his body.
David Norton, the investigating inspector for HSE, said: "It's vital that companies take action to protect employees who are required to operate potentially dangerous machinery. Otherwise workers will continue to be injured in the future.
"The company knew that rotating parts in the machinery were potentially dangerous. If it had installed guard on the machine, as the law requires, it would have prevented someone being seriously injured."
ADA Machining was also ordered to pay £6,220 towards the costs of the prosecution.
