04/06/2010 - Hire firm fined after man injured

A vehicle hire company has been ordered to pay more than £7,800 in fines and costs after a worker was injured by a moving vehicle.

S.H.B Hire Ltd, of Hampshire, admitted breaching health and safety regulations at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

The court heard a mechanic reversed a Ford Transit 350 tipper in order to access another vehicle, which needed repairing, at the site in Uxbridge Road, Southall.

In the meantime, Matthew Stevens, 35, from Brentford, was cleaning another vehicle when he was hit by the tipper, suffering bruising and swelling to both his lower legs.

Mr Stevens tried to avoid the vehicle by jumping on the bonnet of the car he was cleaning.

The Health and Safety Executive handed S.H.B Hire an Improvement Notice following the incident on 29 January 2008. The firm complied with the notice to organise the yard and create a separate area for pedestrians, valeting and a nearby school car park.

The Romsey-based company pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,815.
