11/06/2010 - Landlords register will be scrapped

New laws on private landlords are being scrapped, the Tory-Lib Dem Government has announced.

According to housing minister Grant Shapps, well-established legislation already oversees the private rented sector and does not need changed. But the Association of Residential Lettings Agents said it is "extremely disappointed" by the announcement. It said tenants are not being protected.

Mr Shapps told the Commons: "Today I make a promise to good landlords across the country: the Government has no plans to create any burdensome red tape and bureaucracy, so you are able to continue providing a service to your tenants. But for the bad landlords, I am putting councils on alert to use the range of powers already at their disposal to make sure tenants are properly protected."

A spokeswoman for the Department for Communities and Local Government said new laws were proposed last year in light of the October 2008 Rugg Review of the Private Rented Sector. Bringing in a national register of landlords, new laws for letting agents and compulsory written tenancy contracts would mean too much extra red tape, according to the spokeswoman.
