14/06/2010 - Selfridges wins best store award
Selfridges has beaten off stiff competition to be named the best department store in the world.
The UK-based chain went up against Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and Bloomingdale's in New York to claim the top industry honour.
Selfridges, which has two branches in Manchester and one in Birmingham, is famed for the creative window displays at its century-old flagship store in central London.
Paul Kelly, Selfridges vice chairman, said: "We are delighted to have won this very special award and very proud of our teams who have all contributed in making this happen.
"This is very much in recognition of all their hard work. This centenary-old brand, built on the most extraordinary heritage, confirms that Selfridges is the most relevant and exciting department store today."
Selfridges received the accolade at the Global Department Store Summit in New York.
The award was decided on behalf of both the IGDS (Intercontinental Group of Department Stores) and the IADS (International Association of Department Stores).
