11/06/2010 - Statue taken in delicatessen raid

Thieves have made off with two items - including a 5ft Betty Boop statue - from a small business in North Tyneside, police have confirmed.

The figurine of the cartoon character, worth about £500, was taken from outside the Marche Delicatessen at Briar Edge, Forest Hall. A Pumphrey's Coffee sign, with a value of about £100, was taken in a separate raid.

Northumbria Police have issued an appeal for any witnesses to the thefts to come forward as they investigate the incidents.

Sergeant Matt Bruno said: "I'm sure if someone saw a 5ft statue of Betty Boop being carried along the street they will remember seeing her. I also hope they remember who was carrying her as well.

"If you have any information about either of these incidents or have been offered this statue or sign for sale please contact the police. The shop is particularly keen to get Betty back as she is a local landmark and is much missed by customers and staff alike."
