19/03/2010 - Firm fined £5,000 for 'unsafe' site
A hotel company has been fined £5,000 after failing to enforce two Health and Safety Executive (HSE) improvement orders.
HSE officers first visited the Bluechip Hotels construction site in Newquay in February 2008, expressing concern over a lack of protection for employees working at height and blocked walkways. The firm was then ordered to make changes to the development.
A follow-up visit the next month revealed that no modifications had been made.
Bodmin Magistrates' Court fined the company, which pleaded guilty to the offences, £3,000 for breaches of health and safety legislation and ordered it to pay £2,000 in costs.
Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Barry Trudgian said: "Simple measures can be taken to ensure the safety of employees on construction sites, such as providing guardrails where necessary and keeping the site clear of hazards such as rubbish."
