26/03/2010 - Firms fined over brain damage fall
Two decorating firms and two company directors have been fined a combined total of £6,000 after a worker was left brain damaged following an apparent fall from a ladder at a site in Newsom, near Huddersfield.
Self-employed painter Trevor Dawson, from Ravensthorpe, West Yorkshire, was working on a student accommodation refurbishment in August 2007 when he seemingly fell from a ladder, although no witnesses could confirm this.
Mr Dawson, 58, was left unable to recall details of the accident because of his injuries.
Huddersfield Magistrates' Court heard that principal contractor Fosters TurnKey Contracts and Liversedge Decorating Contractors, which had been employed to decorate the flats, had allowed work to be carried out that was inadequately planned.
Both companies pleaded guilty to breaches of health and safety legislation and were fined a total of £4,000. Paul Daniel, of Brighouse, and Clive Dewhirst, of Dewsbury, both Liversedge directors, were also fined £1,000 each.
