02/03/2010 - Hotel room rates hit six-year low

Prices of hotel rooms in the UK have dropped to their lowest level in six years, new figures reveal.

According to a survey by Hotels.com, the average price of a room per night fell 13% from £97 in 2008 to £84 last year.

The biggest decline was in Southampton, where the rates dropped 30% to £61 in 2009 from £88 the previous year. Belfast saw a 27% drop, while prices in Aberdeen fell 26%.

Bath remained the most expensive place in the country despite experiencing a 11% decline, with rooms costing £111 on average.

Britons staying in London hotels paid £106 on average per night, although prices in the capital dropped 7% from 2008.

Only Oxford and Newquay, in Cornwall, saw room prices rise last year, registering an increase of 14% and 13% respectively.

Coventry in the West Midlands, where the rates dropped 20% to just £47, was the best value town last year.

The downswing also means Britain, which was deemed the most expensive country for hotels in Europe three years ago, has now dropped to 13th on the list.
