11/03/2010 - Landlord revives pub with psychology
A pub landlord has said her skills as a lecturer of a psychology have helped her turn-around a Birmingham pub threatened with closure.
Dr Julie Hulme, who teaches psychology and mental health at Staffordshire University, and partner Callum Harris are celebrating their first anniversary as the helm of the Pint Pot pub in Sutton Coldfield.
The doctor of neuroscience said her work helped her to turn it into a thriving establishment with live music and darts tournaments.
"The skills I use as a lecturer of psychology have been really helpful with running the pub because I know how to train and run a team and it has also given me an eye for what people want in their local," she said.
Business partner Callum has taken a sabbatical from his career as a lecturer in law and psychology to manage the pub, allowing Julie to continue her job in the psychology department at the university.
"I'm quite lucky because Callum runs the pub and I step in when I'm needed - I'm lucky because I get to do the best stuff," she laughed.
