08/03/2010 - Pets rescued as fire engulfs shop

Animals had to be rescued from a pet store as a fire raged at a retail centre in southern Scotland.

About 40 firefighters battled the blaze, which started in the Brantano shoe store in the Peel Centre in Dumfries at about 6.30pm on Saturday.

As the smoke started to spread from the Brantano store, employers at the nearby Pets at Home outlet tried to rescue animals in the building.

Passers-by first spotted the fire at the shoe store and raised the alarm.

A joint police and fire service investigation is now under way to try and ascertain how the fire started.
