24/03/2010 - Raiders steal gold worth £500,000

Two masked men have stolen gold worth almost £500,000 and a quantity of cash from a Birmingham jewellers, according to West Midlands Police.

The police investigation revealed that the "brazen" thieves, who took away necklaces, earrings, bangles, rings and wedding sets, as well as some money, from Babber Jewellers on Soho Road, had examined the store the night before the robbery.

The raiders struck the Handsworth on October 20 last year and fled with 22 carat Asian gold, with stones set into many of the pieces, police said.

Detective constable Joanne Potter said: "They were extremely brazen as they came to the same shop the night before unmasked - then put on the masks the following night.

"We believe that such a large quantity of jewellery would have been broken down and sold on piecemeal, so we are keen to hear from anyone who may have been offered any of the items at a reduced price."
