22/03/2010 - Rules changed to stop pubs shutting
Measures designed to help prevent local independent pubs from closing have been announced by the Government, with around 40 community pubs close in the UK every week.
Pubs minister John Healey said funding of £4 million will be available, including £3.3 million for trying to improve pubs and help ordinary people contribute money to struggling pubs in order to stop them from shutting. Powers to prevent pubs being demolished and restrictions on selling a pub where it will reopen as different kind of business have been granted to local authorities.
The rule changes will allow pubs to adapt to include side businesses such as restaurants and book shops without the need to get planning permission. Pubs will also be able to buy local ales from independent producers and will be able to get advice to help them strengthen their businesses.
Mr Healey said: "This package of tough, practical measures aims to put some real support behind our community pubs, giving publicans more support to diversify and punters more choice. We need and can do more to support our pubs which can be at the heart of a local community."
