12/03/2010 - Shopkeeper attacked with machete

Police are hunting machete-wielding thugs who tried to steal a till at a newsagents in Salford.

A 53-year-old shopkeeper was struck with the 18-inch machete and has undergone emergency surgery to his hands. He is now in a stable condition in hospital.

The four raiders left empty-handed after they failed to dislodge the till at the shop on New Lane, Peel Green, on Wednesday afternoon.

The offenders were described as white, slim and in their late teens to early 20s. They all wore face coverings, and three were dressed in dark hooded tops and had dark trousers and trainers. One wore a light-coloured hooded top.

Detective Constable Jackie Johnson, of Salford CID, said: "Attacks with this level of violence against a shopkeeper are thankfully rare. However, that will be of little consolation to this particular victim.

"Within seconds an ordinary day in the shop was turned into a nightmarish ordeal involving machete-wielding thugs.

"I can assure the victim, and the law-abiding residents of Peel Green, that we are taking this extremely seriously and are now following up several lines of inquiry."
