01/03/2010 - Smoke ban flouting landlord jailed
A Lancashire pub landlord believed to be the first person jailed for flouting the smoking ban after he organised a "mass light-up" is "devastated" at his sentence, his wife said.
Bolton magistrates jailed Nick Hogan, of Chorley, for six months for non-payment of fines resulting from ban breaches at his two pubs.
The 43-year-old smoker organised a "mass light-up" in The Swan and Barristers, both in Bolton, Greater Manchester, on the day the ban came into force, the January 2008 hearing heard.
His wife Denise, 53, also a publican, said that following the conviction he lost his job and was unable to keep up with the £125-a-week fine payments.
