A "chemical incident" at the Science Museum in central London left three members of staff needing treatment from paramedics for irritation to the eyes.
According to Scotland Yard, the museum - on Exhibition Road - was evacuated as emergency services were called. A total of 20 fire fighters arrived at the building after the incident.
A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said: "We believe it was a chemical incident. Three members of museum staff are being treated by the London Ambulance Service for irritation to the eyes."
Although police are not treating the incident as suspicious, an investigation is being carried out. It has also been said that the museum will remain closed until Friday.
In a statement, a spokesman for the attraction said: "The Science Museum has been evacuated following a suspected chemical incident and will be closed for the remainder of Thursday, May 20.
"No visitors have been affected by the incident. Nine members of staff and contractors are being treated for mild irritation to the eyes and throat. The Science Museum is working closely with the London Fire Brigade, the Metropolitan Police and the London Ambulance Service to assess the next steps."
