24/05/2010 - Dirty floor caused workplace fall

A worker fell on a dirty floor breaking his wrist - an incident which he later received £20,000 in compensation for.

Brent Songhurst said the incident could have been avoided if there was not dust on the floor. It had been created by shot blast at medical instrument manufacturer Biomet.

He was forced to take half a year off work after the incident.

Mr Songhurst slipped on the debris from the blast machinery while he was unloading a barrel of acid.

Following the incident he was left with "severe shoulder pain", but has now returned to work after surgery.

He said: "I know my injury could easily have been avoided had more care been taken to ensure the floor was kept clean."
