25/05/2010 - Fire at chemical factory contained
A chemical factory blaze near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, has been contained after more than 120 firefighters battled the fire through the night.
The fire at Grosvenor Chemicals in Linthwaite was attended by more than 30 appliances from across the region before it was brought under control, West Yorkshire Fire Service said. People living in the area have been asked not to venture outdoors and contact medical services if they feel unwell.
A spokeswoman for the fire service said the crew received a call from the factory at 1.05am on Monday morning. The cause of the fire has not yet been identified. A storage section which housed pesticides and glue-based products was badly hit in the fire but by Tuesday morning the flames were extinguished, she said.
"Foam has been used to prevent the spread of fire and the fire is now under control due to the hard work of firefighters and an effective multi-agency response. As a precaution, members of the public in the south Huddersfield area are advised to stay indoors. Anyone with concerns should contact their GP or NHS Direct. Or, if you develop respiratory problems, please call an ambulance," she said.
