11/05/2010 - HSE launches Asbestos roadshows
A campaign highlighting the message that only competent surveyors are allowed to examine buildings for asbestos is to be taken on the road by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Asbestos: The Survey Guide, which was first launched in January this year, urges those responsible for managing the deadly substance to ensure they are hiring a suitably qualified person to determine the risk posed by the presence of the material. It stipulates that only UKAS-accredited or ABICS-certified surveyors should be approached.
Guide author and HSE principal investigator, Dr Martin Gibson, said: "Ensuring that contractors are competent to do asbestos surveys should be a top priority for those responsible for managing the risks from asbestos.
"Those organisations or individuals without accreditation and/or certification will find it more difficult to demonstrate that they are competent, so by employing a contractor with accreditation and/or certification, dutyholders can better meet their legal requirements."
