12/05/2010 - KFC fined £19,000 over cockroach
Fast food giant KFC has been fined after an environmental health inspector found a cockroach, a mouse and dried chicken blood at a central London branch.
The company was ordered to pay nearly £19,000 at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court, after admitting breaching five hygiene rules.
During an inspection of the busy Leicester Square branch in August 2008, an environmental health officer from Westminster City Council found a number of hygiene risks, including a cockroach eating a chip on a food dispensing counter, where it could have come into contact with chicken served to customers.
The inspector also found flies, a mouse and dried blood on the floor, and the hand wash dispenser in the food preparation area was empty.
Michael Goodwin, prosecuting, said: "There was no soap in the ground-floor food preparation room so, on the day of the inspection at least, it was not possible for food preparation staff to wash their hands properly."
