04/05/2010 - Safety of Jewellery Quarter ensured
Police have ensured the safety of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, after a courier firm suspended deliveries to the area as its van drivers were worried about being attacked by robbers.
The courier company temporarily suspended deliveries to Jewellery Quarter after a recent spate of robberies in the area.
However, West Midlands Police is trying to reassure the safety of those who live, work and shop in the area.
Representatives of the police force are currently in talks with representatives of the firm over the issue.
Chief Inspector Darren Miles said: "While one offence is one too many, the reality is that the Jewellery Quarter is safe and will continue to be so.
"We are aware that a courier temporarily suspended delivers to the Jewellery Quarter following three robberies last year and a fourth in another area of the city in March.
"But we have worked hard over the past few years to ensure the safety of those who live, work and shop in the area to great effect."
