17/05/2010 - Unusual business names stand out

An optician called Spex in the City, a hairdressers named Curl Up And Dye and a chippy called A Salt And Battered have featured in a list of funny and unusual business names of the country.

The survey by ThomsonLocal.com found that the most popular pub names included the Red Lion, Royal Oak or Crown, while hair salons were most often named The Hair Shop, The Hair Studio or Reflections.

Among the most obvious names for shops were The Flower Shop for florists and Mr Chips for fish and chip shops, while the Taj Mahal was found to be the most common name for Indian restaurants.

Mark Cox, from ThomsonLocal.com, said: "Everyone knows a Red Lion pub or Taj Mahal restaurant, but we want to find the businesses with unusual names that really stand out on the high street and bring a smile to people's faces.

"The UK's independent businesses have had a hard time in the last two years but, as we slowly come out of recession, it's the businesses with the most memorable, quirky names that will truly stand out."
