11/11/2010 - Firm fined after worker breaks back
A firm has been fined after safety breaches led to a lorry driver breaking his back.
Colin Ball, of Wolverhampton, was injured at foam manufacturer Reticel's Stoke on Trent factory in October last year. He was struck by a heap of insulating board, being knocked backwards into a trailer, and suffered a serious head injury and several spinal fractures.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Lyn Mizen said: "This incident could easily have been prevented had the company implemented a suitable and sufficient safe system of work to effectively manage the risks posed by stacked materials in their warehouse."
The company was found to have breached Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974. It was fined £6,238 and ordered to pay costs of £11,762.
