05/11/2010 - Firm fined after worker snaps wrist
A Cardiff manufacturing firm has been fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £6,691 in costs after a worker broke his wrist when his glove became entangled in an unguarded drill.
Elmatic (Cardiff) Ltd pleaded guilty to a breaching the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 at Cardiff Magistrates' Court.
Earlier, the court heard how 21-year-old employee Lee Baker had been asked to drill holes in metal boxes despite not having adequate training on how to use the machinery.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which had previously taken formal action against the company to ensure that drills were adequately guarded, discovered that the pillar drill Mr Baker was using did not have an appropriate guard fitted.
Subsequently, Mr Baker's wrist was fractured in two places and he needed to have plates inserted into his arm when his glove became tangled in the drill at the company's factory in Wentloog Road, Rumney on March 11, 2009.
