19/11/2010 - Gas heaters recalled due to fault

A company which sells portable gas heaters has issued a recall on around 5,000 of its products after it was found they could be emitting carbon monoxide.

Unipart said a malfunction in three of its heaters could lead to the emission of carbon monoxide "marginally" above recommended levels.

It said that people who purchased Royal Classic, Calor Classic or Calor Compact portable heaters since August 1 this year should switch off the product immediately.

A spokesman for Unipart estimated that 5,000 of the products were affected.

"Whilst there is perceived to be minimal risk, our customers' safety is paramount, so we have decided to carry out a product recall," the spokesman said.

"The malfunction could lead to the heaters emitting carbon monoxide marginally above the allowed levels.

"Royal Classic, Calor Classic and Calor Compact portable heaters which have been purchased after August 1 this year must be switched off immediately, and returned to wherever customers bought them from.

"We wish to thank our affected customers for their co-operation and apologise for any inconvenience caused."

He said retailers have suspended sales of the three products and any affected customers will be offered a replacement where possible or a full refund.
