12/11/2010 - Hotels to 'personalise' services

Hotels could end up personalising food and furniture for guests in the near future as a result of growing demand, according to a report.

A study by travel technology solutions company Amadeus said that hotels will also have to deal with an ageing travelling population as well as a "go-nowhere-gamer" younger age group, which is more interested in staying at home.

The report, examining how hotels might operate in the year 2020, also predicted that during the period some holidaymakers could choose to home-swap instead of staying at hotels.

The survey of 600 people around the world, including 42% who are employed in the travel sector, suggested that hotels could expect to personalise furniture and food for their guests, offering a "total service model" which would take care of costs, travel and services.

According to the poll, more than 90% of respondents think that in 10 years time, guests in hotels will expect personalised services during their stay based on the choices they make while booking or before arriving at the hotel.

The report said the ageing of the world population was one of the biggest and most persistent trends that hotels needed to address.

There could be "multi-generational" holidays by 2020, particularly among Europeans. Also hotels will have to cater more explicitly for the needs of female guests.
