25/10/2010 - Friendly landlord sign of good pub

Wi-fi and additional menu items have little to do with ensuring the success of a pub, but a smiling landlord could make all the difference, according to a poll.

A survey by Greene King has found that only 1% of pub-goers care about wi-fi with their beer, and another 1% expect cakes and Danish pastries in a proper pub, showing that efforts to include those 'amenities' may not be what makes a British boozer a success.

Only 7% say they would like to find coffee and tea in a pub, according to the company survey.

However, out of all people polled, 57% went for the most traditional approach, stating that a friendly landlord is the most inviting aspect.

Rooney Anand, chief executive, Greene King, said: "We know from our own experience that people are drinking more tea and coffee, and eating more food, in pubs these days, and these are very important for the future of the pub trade.

"But it's significant that top of most people's list is the authentic atmosphere and feel of a British pub that comes from the landlord, the sense of community and the quality of the food and drink on offer.

"The British pub meets timeless human needs that are simply not fulfilled by other meeting places or groups, like social media networks. That's why it survives and will continue to do so despite all the other opportunities we have for "joining" and for networking."
