19/10/2010 - Hotels out of old buildings hailed
Hotels designed out of old buildings are dominating a list of best hotels, it has been announced.
Most of the hotels in the top 10 list in the Good Hotel Guide 2011 feature old buildings that have been converted into high-end hospitality establishments for guests, including a Grade II listed Gothic castle in North Yorkshire - Swinton Park - voted Family Hotel of the Year.
Other renovated hotels include the 18th century villa - Mount Vernon - in New Quay, County Clare, named the Irish Heritage House of the Year, and a 16th century farmhouse, Ty Mawr Hotel in Carmarthenshire, which was awarded the Welsh Country House title.
The guide said: "The winners vary greatly in size and style. What they have in common is how well they look after their guests."
Winners of the Good Hotel Guide's Cesar awards, named after legendary hotelier Cesar Ritz, include Number 16, a 19th century town house in Kensington, which collected the London Hotel of the Year title, while Restaurant 36 On The Quay in Hampshire, which overlooks the harbour, won the best Restaurant with Rooms award.
Thistleyhaugh Farm in Northumberland won the title of Farm Guest House of the Year for being a Gothic castle offering a variety of activities for all ages, and the stylish three stone buildings of Old Bank in Oxford helped it collect the City Hotel of the Year title.
