21/10/2010 - HSE introduces risk assessment tool
A risk assessment test on the internet will allow employers to evaluate all hazards at the workplace in 20 minutes.
The online system, developed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), will help bosses consider dangers that might affect the office staff and will let them come up with safety options.
The web tool, which has just been launched, will help eliminate paperwork for the assessment.
This will also benefit safety officials, who can check the assessment to know if the workplace is taking adequate measures to ensure the safety of employees.
The tool works by asking a number of questions to employers about the office and then comes up with a hazard assessment, pointing out required actions to curb the threats.
HSE already helps 34 offices, including charity shops, hairdressers and estate agents with risk assessments.
Judith Hackitt, the HSE chair, said: "Employers know their businesses better than anyone - and with a little helping hand they can easily consider what is necessary to protect workers. Complying with the law in a low risk business can be done with common sense by anyone."
