28/10/2010 - Pizza manufacturer fined £15,000

A pizza manufacturer has been fined £15,000 after leaving employees at risk of falling four metres onto a concrete floor below, despite warnings from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

A first floor doorway at Capri Foods Ltd was used to load and unload goods from a forklift truck in the yard outside, but it was left open even when the forklift was parked up. No railings were in place to prevent employees falling through it and the HSE issued an improvement notice on July 29 last year.

Capri Foods Ltd, of Worton Hall Industrial Estate, Worton Road, Isleworth, west London, was given until November 1 to make the doorway safe, but when the HSE visited on December 9, no improvements had been made. The HSE inspector watched as an employee leant out of the doorway to empty a bowl of water.

Capri Foods Ltd pleaded guilty to a breach of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and a breach of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 in connection to the non-compliance. The company was fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £2,607 in costs at City of London Magistrates' Court.
