11/10/2010 - Thieves steal cancer centre roof
A support centre for cancer patients has been forced to close its doors temporarily after thieves stole lead roofing from the building.
The Maggie's Centre, in the Partick area of Glasgow, could be hit with increased property insurance rates to accompany extensive repair bills for fix water damage to carpets, upholstery and electrics - which occurred because of the theft.
Strathclyde Police revealed the centre had to close for three days to repair the damage caused by the burglars, which Sergeant Neil Duncan described as "disgusting".
He added: "The theft of lead from the roof of the centre, whose sole purpose is to provide cancer support for families affected by cancer, is absolutely disgusting.
"The repairs to the roof will run to thousands of pounds and the damage to the inside of the building runs to several hundreds of pounds, money which had already been donated by the supporters of Maggie's Centres across Glasgow and the west of Scotland."
Students and academic staff from Strathclyde University have carried out temporary repairs to the roof, while domestic cleaners are tending to the internal damage.
