29/09/2010 - Chicken company fined over injuries
A Norfolk chicken company has been fined £8,000 over two separate workplace accidents, including one in which an employee skinned his own hand.
In July last year, a worker at Crown Chicken Ltd had the skin on the back of his hand, from his knuckles to his wrist, torn off while using a machine to skin chickens.
Thetford Magistrates' Court was told that the worker's glove was caught in the carcass de-skinning machine and his hand pulled towards the cutting blade.
In a separate incident, another employee's hand was crushed while working with a forklift truck. The company was charged with having failed to provide adequate safety measures.
At Thetford Magistrates' Court, Crown Chicken pleaded guilty to four breaches of health and safety regulations.
The firm, which processes 365,000 chickens a week at its site on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £5,500 in costs.
