14/09/2010 - Firm fined for safety violation

A scrap metal company has been fined for breaching safety regulation after a security guard injured himself by falling into water while helping to berth a vessel.

RM Supplies (Inverkeithing) Ltd could face higher insurance premiums after being ordered to pay £14,000 when bosses pleaded guilty to being in breach of the Docks Regulations (1988) at Dunfermline Sheriff Court. Director Thomas Muir was also fined £2,750 after he failed to carry out a risk assessment as stipulated under Management Regulations (1999).

Earlier, the court heard how night watchman Charles Greenhill, 47, fell into water as he helped to oversee the berthing of a vessel at a dilapidated quay. The procedure was carried out at night, despite a lack of sufficient lighting in the surrounding area.

Greenhill had to be rescued by the ship's lifeboat due to a lack of efficient life-saving equipment in close proximity. Mr Muir, 56, of Boglilly Road, Kirkcaldy, was prosecuted under health and safety law following the incident in May 2007.
