21/09/2010 - Firm fined £20,000 after man dies
A business and its director have been fined £20,000 after a man was killed by the blade of an industrial mixing machine.
Building Chemical Research Ltd (BCR), based in Radcliffe, Bury, and director Stuart Reich were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive after Paul Palmer's death in August 2005.
44-year-old Mr Palmer got inside the powerful mixing machine at the building materials firm to clean it, but it was then turned on by a fellow worker.
The HSE told the hearing at Bolton Crown Court that it should not have been possible to switch the machine on once someone was inside it.
Both Mr Reich, 62, and the company admitted breaching health and safety laws. The company was fined £16,000 and Mr Reich was fined £4,000.
