16/09/2010 - Firm in hot water over coffee blast
Sainsbury's could face legal action after one of its coffee machines exploded in a branch in Farnborough, Hampshire, injuring seven people.
The supermarket chain took the precautionary measure of switching off all its Elektra vending machines when a ruptured pipe caused the blast at their branch in Kingsmead Shopping Centre.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury's revealed the company was looking into the matter.
She said: "We have started a full investigation on site with our own and independent safety experts, and those of the supplier of the coffee machine, together with our maintenance contractor.
"As a precautionary measure all the coffee machines of this type in our cafes and restaurants will remain out of service until this investigation is complete."
While 158 Sainsbury's branches use the Elektra vending machines, many other outlets had coffee dispensers that were fully operational.
One of the injured, a 23-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with head, arm and eye injuries.
