01/09/2010 - Haulage company fined over injury

A haulage company has been fined £5,000 after a member of staff was left with brain damage following an accident at work.

Nicholas Holmes, 49, of Bradford, was struck on the head with a 290kg panel saw while making a delivery to the Saw Centre in Eglinton Street, Glasgow, on August 16, 2007.

One of the panel saws fell off the vehicle, hitting him on the head and leaving him with permanent injuries.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found his employers Joda Fright Ltd, of Crosshills, West Yorkshire, did not have a reliable system of communication for drivers regarding the securing and stability of loads.

Mr Holmes had been unaware of how the saws were secured in the lorry and the load became unstable when he removed the straps, which caused the incident.

Joda Freight Limited was fined £5,000 after admitting breaching Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 at Glasgow Sheriff Court.
